Louisiana’s first water buffalo dairy herd started to form in 2019 when Sarah bought the first water buffalo she ever met, Stevie Nicks, and two pregnant heifers from a dairy in California. The animals were planning to stay on a friend’s farm in Colorado until the summer of 2020. When the pandemic resulted in state borders closing in April 2020, Sarah took a cross-country road trip to pick up her water buffalo plus a bull and another pregnant heifer from Colorado. The animals are bred naturally with a bull who lives in the pasture with the milking herd. The calves stay with their moms for the duration of the lactation cycle, around 9-10 months. This allows for a wonderful bond between cow and calf but also sets the calf up for a successful healthy life in the pasture.
The herd is now up to 28 animals. We cull animals based on: attitude, parasite resistance, environmental adaptability, yearly pregnancy, soundness of hooves and teeth, and milk quantity/ quality. Many of the male calves are sent to the butcher for meat and the females are sold to other farms and homesteads. See below for animals available for sale now.
